Making a Felt Ball Rug, Slowly.
Last November I made the grand purchase of 8000 felt balls from a very industrious Etsy Seller.
I'm sure like me you've seen those nice squishy Felt Ball Rugs in catalogues this year?
I thought making my own would be a fun project for the house. Almost 10 months later and I'm proud to say I'm half way through threading my 8000 balls into a rug that when I put down on the living room floor NO ONE will be allowed to tread, lie, roll or touch. Practical, huh!?
It's been a bit of an ordeal, though I find the process once I have a spare hour or two quite cathartic, something like the action of Rosary Beads, though I guess I'm praying to the felt god to get me through this one!
I just popped over to the Hay Studio site to see there Pinocchio Rug, and looks like they've come up with some nice new designs too...

OH MY GOODNESS!! 3000? Emma, that is inspired! I love that you're halfway through. I desperately want to see more WIP photos: I can see you have a very clever pattern chart? Wow - just wow. xxx
Very nice, thanks for sharing.
Yes-siree Kate, I have a very complicated pattern chart as I am a true Virgo and couldn't possibly design anything free-hand!
I have some more photos I'll post up soon!
Rental Mobil - Thanks for enjoying!
wow! can't wait to see your final product! :D
I'm also starting on making a round felt ball matt (I don't want to call it a rug, as it will be quite small). Can you give me any advice on how to best stitch the balls together?
Love the rug, keep up the good work... You're doing great...
Hi ... loving your new project. Which Etsy seller did you find your felt balls at?
I love the rug! It's Amazing! Just added your site to my favorites!
WOw, that's quite impressive. Way to go, very inspirational!
I had the same idea late last year, but I only purchased 2000 felt balls.... and I used half of them for a wreath. But I also have lots of wool roving to make balls with.
What are you using to sew together your balls? I read somewhere that nylon twine was the way to go, but there is so much variation in the nylon twine world...
VERY cool project - can't wait to see how it turns out... and how long it takes to get there!
It's a pleasure to stumbled across your lovely blog!

Oh thanks so much Catherine :)
wow. would love to do the same. who did you buy the felt balls from?
Hi Emily!
I was able to order all my balls from an Etsy seller: I think they were based in Hong Kong and they told me the balls were handmade... but who knows!
The etsy seller doesn't seem to be listed anymore, but there were others.
Good luck on your mission!
Emma
